Cut stone steps down a slope that kept washing out

This slope ran down the side of the house to the back garden, and every heavy rain took a little more of it away. The owners wanted a way down that felt safe underfoot and stopped the erosion at the same time.
We set cut stone treads into the grade, wide enough to take a full step, and packed boulder rip-rap either side to break the run of the water. A charcoal block retaining wall picks up the level change at the top and ties into the existing fence line.
Hardscaping only lasts if the base underneath it is right. The excavation and the compacted base take longer than laying the stone does, and that is the part of the job that decides whether the steps are still level in ten years.
